The LG G3 has finally gone official after months of speculations, leaks and rumors. Most of the features were quasi-known beforehand, so nothing actually strikes us as surprising. The smartphone’s main feature is that it is the first from a major manufacturer to sport a 2K Quad HD resolution display. The 5.5 inch display has a screen ratio of 76.4 percent, which means the bezels are ultra slim.
Other features of the G3 include a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization and a laser autofocus feature for better images. The Snapdragon 801 chipset on the smartphone is clocked at 2.5 GHz and there will also be 2 or 3GB of RAM on board depending on the region.
Storage wise, LG is providing the smartphone in 16 or 32GB configurations along with a microSD card slot (up to 128GB) as well. The G3 is running Android 4.4.2 KitKat and comes with a 3,000 mAh battery, which is incidentally the same capacity as the LG G2. However, LG has apparently replaced the metal in the battery cathode with graphite, which should substantially boost battery life.
The smartphone will be available in Metallic Black, Silk White, Shine Gold, Moon Violet and Burgundy Red although some of them might be region restricted.
Much to our joy, LG has provided a metallic casing for the LG G3 which is removable to access the microSD and SIM card slot. There is also a rear facing 1W speaker on board the handset, which provides powerful audio output.
Software Features
The software is where all the magic is, as with any LG device. One of the interesting features introduced by the manufacturer is Smart Notice, which is LG’s take on Google Now. It can remind users to perform certain tasks like turning on WiFi based on their location (home, office etc) or notify to delete certain apps that the users haven’t opened in a while.
Keeping the flat UI in mind, LG has also made some tweaks to the keyboard, which it now calls the Slim Keyboard. The size is user adjustable, a convenient feature for those looking for a keyboard size of their choice.
The smartphone also comes with the LG Health app which supports the built-in pedometer as well as a calorie counter to keep a tab on your health on a regular basis. This is basically a variation of Samsung’s S Health app, but without the flashy heart rate monitor.
Other security features like Knock Code, Content Lock and Kill Switch are well in place here, which was always expected. Kill Switch is basically LG’s iteration of Android Device Manager, letting you locate the phone in case of theft or remotely wipe data. The pricing of the smartphone is yet to be announced, but LG will start selling the device tomorrow starting from South Korea followed by over 170 carriers across the globe in the coming days.
Accessories
LG will also launch a bunch of accessories with the smartphone such as the QuickCircle case and a wireless charger. The LG Tone Infinim stereo bluetooth headset which is made in collaboration with Harman/Kardon will be available as well. Some of these accessories might be limited to a specific region, although the Quick Circle case should be widely available.
